Director of Basketball

Callum Knox

 

Callum Knox joined the University as Head Coach of Women’s Basketball in 2014, before being appointed Director in 2016. 

Callum is a UKCC Level 2 qualified basketball coach and in addition to his role at the University is a member of the coaching staff for the Scottish Under 16 Women’s Basketball Team and last year was the Head Coach of the Scottish Student Sport Team. He is a sportscotland Sports Educator and a Scottish Sports Futures Young Coach Mentor, and has coached all skill and age levels from primary school to international standard athletes. 

In recent years, Callum has led the Women’s 1st Team to two BUCS Scottish Division 1A titles, a promotion to BUCS Premier League and a National League Cup Final appearance. Along the way he has received several personal awards for his contributions to the sport, the most prominent being basketballscotland Development Coach of the Year in 2015. In the same year, Callum took on the role of Head Coach for the Scotland Under 15 National Development Squads, which competed in Barcelona, Spain. 

His coaching style continues to evolve with a player centred approach at the heart of everything he does. When he’s not coaching, Callum is also the University’s Health and Fitness Manager. 

Head Coach of the Men’s 1st Team

Jake Sirrell

 

Jake graduated from the University of Abertay with a degree in Sports Coaching and Development and is also a UKCC Level 2 and Positive Coaching Scotland Coach.

As a player he represented Scotland at National level from u13s up to Senior Level.  He currently plays for Dunfermline Reign basketball club in SBC Division 1, which recently won the league in the 19/20 season with a record of 17-1.

Over the last 5 years he has assisted with the Scotland Junior National teams at U12, U15 and U18 level. As well as coaching at the University he also coaches for Dunfermline Reign and is the Head Coach of the U14s and U16s boys.

‘My goal for the 1st team moving forward is to have a high level of commitment from all players to the program, whilst keeping a positive culture in which players can constructively challenge each other and me as Coach to help us continually improve and reach our goal of being top of BUCS Division 2a.’

Head Coach of the Women’s 2nd Team

Lauren Ness

 

Lauren joined the University in 2013 as an undergraduate student and played on the 1st team for the duration of her degree. We are very lucky to have Lauren back at the University; she coaches the Women’s 2nd team in addition to working for the University’s Admissions Department.

Lauren is a UKCC Level 1 qualified basketball coach originally from Edinburgh, where she played for her local team the City of Edinburgh Kool Kats during her time at school. During her time at St Andrews, Lauren played for the Women’s 1st team while also coaching at a local high school in St Andrews. As a player she held a number of positions on the basketball committee and was involved in the development of the Women’s Seconds team which was established in 2017.

After completing her undergraduate here, she went on study teaching at the University of Cambridge where she played for the Women’s 1st team. Following her training year, she took on the role of Head Coach for the University of Cambridge Women’s 2nds Basketball Team before moving back to Scotland. Her time leading the Cambridge team helped develop Lauren’s coaching style and philosophy even further which she looks forward to continuing this season.

Head Coach of the Men’s 2nd Team

Mike Higton

 

Mike is a 4th year undergraduate student here at the University and is currently also the Club Vice President.

Mike began playing Basketball at 15 in Warrington, England – his hometown. He joined the Basketball Club at the end of his 1st year here and has not looked back, he has since played for the 2nd Team as well as Captained for the previous two years. During his time as Captain Mike enjoyed assisting Ben Catchpole (Our previous 2nd team coach) during practises and game and this year has stepped up to lead our Men’s 2nd team.

‘The second team has shown consistent improvement over the three years that it has been a part of BUCS and it has continued this development this season, gaining some excellent victories both in the league and cup competitions. Given the level of talent we have, I believe that, with consistent coaching, the team is capable of challenging for promotion next season.’
